Sending money to Zimbabwe: what to check before you transfer

The advertised rate is rarely the rate you get. Here is what actually determines the cost, and what to confirm before a first transfer.

The advertised rate is not the whole cost

Three things determine what your recipient ends up with: the exchange rate applied, the fee charged, and whether the money is delivered in the currency you intended. A service advertising zero fees usually recovers it in the rate, and one advertising a strong rate may apply it only above a threshold you will not hit.

Compare on the amount received, not the amount sent. Ask the provider to quote the exact figure the recipient will collect, in the currency they will collect it in, before you commit.

  • Ask for the amount received, not the fee
  • Confirm the payout currency explicitly — USD and ZWL are not interchangeable
  • Check whether the rate is guaranteed at the moment you send or at collection

Collection method decides how much friction your family faces

Cash collection, mobile wallet and bank deposit each fail in different ways. Cash collection depends on the agent having float, which varies by branch and by day. Mobile wallets are convenient but capped. Bank deposits are reliable but slowest, and the account currency matters.

Ask the person receiving the money which method has actually worked for them recently, rather than choosing on your side of the transaction. They know which branches are reliable and you do not.

Before a first transfer

Send a small amount first and confirm it arrives as quoted. The cost of testing is trivial against the cost of a large transfer landing in the wrong currency or sitting unclaimed.

  • Confirm the recipient's name matches their ID exactly — mismatches are the most common reason collection is refused
  • Keep the reference number until collection is confirmed
  • Check whether the provider is registered to operate the corridor

Common questions

Is it better to send USD or local currency?
It depends entirely on what the recipient needs to spend it on and where they will collect. Ask them before choosing; the correct answer changes and is theirs to give, not yours to assume.
Why was my transfer held?
Usually a name mismatch against ID, or a compliance check triggered by amount or frequency. Both resolve faster if you keep the reference and the sender's own ID to hand.
